WHAT ABOUT NORMA? Seriously, it pains me how under-appreciated she is. She was just as good an actress as everyone else in her time period, but no ones gives a shit about her. I need to change that. Sometimes I think that people are too scared not to go mainstream and therefore only dare to admire…
Humm..I’m sorry to say this, Kate fans…but…to hell with her..I mean..happy b-day but I DO NOT LIKE HER. NOR HER HUSBAND. He was a disgusting perv and I think that was the reason they made a nice~ couple. They both were obnoxious.
Katharine Hepburn and Spencer Tracy were never married…
I think it also helps to keep in mind that being a bitch was not an easy thing to do back in the day. That shit took character! I mean really, though. I remember when I was first reading Gone With The Wind (three months ago, trololo) and thinking there was nothing ‘great’ about Scarlett O’Hara, nothing to like about her - but being abrasive, harsh, and “bitchy” was to deny traditional femininity - essentially denying your self worth in that era. That takes a lot of guts and self conviction, don’t you think? A lot of confidence and self determination outside of how everyone else thinks you should be. It tends to put people and their “angular personalities”, as Kate once referenced herself, into perspective too.
HAHA, Scarlett’s the fictional HBIC of all time. Let me pull out my philosopher’s cap for a second: I think she does have qualities that were, if not redeeming, at least admirable. I like that she was a strong woman, and she knew how to use her femininity to her great advantage, even if people looked down on her for it. I liked that she never gave up in the face of adversity, even if she did things her own way—a way her society didn’t accept. And I also like that she got what was coming to her in the end, even though I think she did grow and change throughout the story. Aww, I love GWTW discussion, lol!
As for Katharine Hepburn’s personality, I do know that she was very close friends with Vivien Leigh (so was Spencer Tracy), and that she was very helpful to Vivien, especially after she and Larry divorced. Kate would drive Viv around to doctor’s appointments and everything.
That’s a good point about Scarlett! She believed in hard work in creating a better future. Probably not exactly in those selfless kinds of terms, but she could still grasp that concept better than your average person - be it in her era or even now.
loooool this has been an amazing post, hasn’t it?! So many tibits of information flying everywhere.
