(500) Days of Summer, (2009)
OKAY I HAVE A LOT OF FEELINGS ABOUT THIS MOVIE. I enjoyed it and everything but I thought Tom was such a fucking dick throughout it. Summer was upfront with not wanting anything serious at the very beginning and broke up with him once she realized he was ignoring that request SO TOM SPENT THE ENTIRE FILM COMPLAINING AND MOANING THAT HIS ‘DREAM WOMAN’ DIDN’T WANT HIM. But, of course, that’s what I thought the film was about—how you can’t place dreams and expectations on solely one person etc and you just have to move on with your life and stop being miserable over it. BUT APPARENTLY I GOT THE OPPOSITE REACTION because I hear nothing but how Summer was a complete and utter bitch to Tom and I’m like ‘WHAT?!? NO! did everyone miss the part where she see said she didn’t want anything serious and Tom was just being a passive-aggressive Nice Guy™?’
HE CALLED HER A BITCH LIKE A COUPLE DAYS AFTER KNOWING HER EXISTENCE FOR LIKE NO REASON, YOU GUYS! JGL is attractive and all, and the movie was completely cute (for what it was), but damn. Tom was such a douche. There was so many times where I wish I could’ve punched him in the face.
MY FEELINGS ABOUT THIS MOVIE; LET ME SHARE THEM.
I totally agree with you for the most part, there’s nothing that makes my skin crawl more than some dude who is insistent that you WILL want to be with him, which was what Tom was adament about (albeit internally) the whole movie. That shit drives me insane. But seriously, Summer was a huge asshole too later on in the movie. I completely respect her disclaimer for the relationship (it’s a speech I know all too well), but when he got his ass kicked for her and all she could do was kick him out of her apartment and say, “You were so DEEPLY uncool”? Talk about some fucked up shit. Then she goes to say they’re merely friends, he stormed out of her apartment insisting theyre a couple.. and then she goes back to her apartment to fuck him. Come on, now. At that point she should of realized he was completely sprung on her and she should leave him alone, but she continued that. Especially at the wedding after they had broke up and she asked him to dance to At Last.
At that ending scene when he goes, “but.. why did you dance with me?” “Because I wanted to.” Heartless. Pure heartlessness. Come on, I’ve been in that situation a few times myself (not even to toot my own horn here), and the most selfless thing you can do is just leave these people the hell alone. Mixed signals are a bitch. /my twelve cents
